Burnie Research Facility

The Intec Demonstration Plant in Burnie, Tasmania was constructed in 2005 to further prove the Intec Zinc Process at increased scale. The plant was officially opened in September, 2005, by the Hon. Bryan Green, MHA, Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure, Energy and Resources.

The plant was operated during 2005 and 2006, demonstrating the continuous operation of the Intec Zinc Process for the extraction of zinc, lead, silver, copper and gold from two feedstocks: tailings from the Hellyer mine, and Electric Arc Furnace dust, a zinc-bearing waste from the recycling of galvanised steel.

The demonstration plant program was successfully completed in August, 2006 after nearly 12 months of continuous operations (except for a 2-week Christmas shutdown). By the completion of the program, 9 weeks of ‘steady state’ operation had been achieved.

Intec has now reconfigured the Demonstration Plant for commercial waste recycling, and is available for further minerals project development work. Occasional campaign testing will be ongoing throughout the life of Intec's projects.
